An Actress Walks in a Cartier With a Crocodile – The Backstory of Urvashi Rautela’s Cannes Necklace

The reptilian necklace that Urvashi Rautela wore on the Cannes red carpet last night is taking the internet by storm, but wait, don’t close the page just yet – The Cartier Crocodile Necklace Urvashi Wore With Her Pink Gown Was Actually… I have an iconic piece. Like many Cartier pieces, this one comes with a great backstory in the form of a necklace. The piece that Urvashi wore is made of two interlocking crocodiles made of gold and studded with diamonds and cabochon emeralds. Urvashi Rautela, who was attending Cannes for the second time, wore a fuchsia ruffled gown by Sima Couture with a crocodile necklace.

Unsurprisingly, the Internet didn’t get it, with comments about “chipmunks” and “chameleons.” Those who freaked out, though, might be interested in the history of alligator necklaces—as Forbes reported, Mexican actress María Félix marched into Cartier’s Paris boutique in 1975, her pet baby alligator in tow (it Was in an aquarium, nothing to worry about). Ms. Felix created a special necklace that would replicate the crocodile’s face and features as closely as possible. The original necklace, which can also be detached and worn as a separate brooch, is part of Cartier’s Historical Jewelery collection.
However, in 2018, Cartier reintroduced the crocodile necklace as well as three other companion pieces including a bracelet and ring. The alligator necklace is believed to be the most expensive in the Cartier range, although no specific price tag is available.
As far as the original necklace – only one other person has worn Maria Felix’s alligator piece. Actress Monica Bellucci paired it with a white shirt at Cannes in 2006, which she attended with then-husband Vincent Cassel.
Enough story. Meanwhile, Urvashi Rautela is dismayed by the necklace generated by the meme fest, writing in an Instagram story: “To all the members of the media, my feelings are attached to my high-gemstone crocodile masterpiece necklace.”
