Biden thinks he’s the only Democrat candidate who can ‘slay’ Donald Trump
Joe Biden sees himself as the only Democrat who can ‘slay’ Donald Trump in the 2024 election, a thought likely on the mind of the Biden family as they debate whether Biden should pursue a second term.
Biden regularly reminds people he is the only person who has beaten Trump, and he remains confident that he is the Democrat who can do it again, The New York Times reported.
The former president announced last week that he would run for the presidency again. But first Trump will have to win the Republican nomination. While he has no announced competition, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is leading the list of those likely to take him on.
Biden, meanwhile, is weighing his next move with insiders saying he’s more likely to run again if Trump is on the GOP ticket.
‘Why would he get out now?’ presidential historian Douglas Brinkley told Politico of Biden. ‘He has no clear successor and what matters here is Trump. Joe Biden is seen as the Donald Trump slayer and many Democrats think he can do it again.
‘He was not my first or second choice for president, but I am a convert,’ Rep. Pramila Jayapal, head of the Progressive Caucus, said of the president. ‘I never thought I would say this, but I believe he should run for another term and finish this agenda we laid out.’

Donald Trump announced last week that he would run for president again.
Biden has said it is his ‘intention’ to run again.
He, first lady Jill Biden and their children Hunter and Ashley are spending Thanksgiving together on Nantucket, where one of the topics of conversation will be whether or not Biden should run for the White House again.
‘I hope Jill and I get a little time to actually sneak away for a week around — between Christmas and Thanksgiving,’ he said earlier this year about conversations the faimly is having.
‘And my guess is it would be early next year we make that judgement,’ he added.
Meanwhile, mulitple Democrats told CNN that they are more confident than ever that Biden is their best bet to beat Trump, who announced last week he is running for president again.
Democrats did better than expected in the midterm elections. They held onto the Senate and Republicans barely won a majority in the House instead of getting a red wave of seats as predicted.
‘This victory belongs to Joe Biden,’ Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said on NBC’s Meet the Press after that election.
Biden, whose approval rating averages in the low-40s, has been criticized for high inflation that has raised the cost of living. But he’s pushed to blame the COVID pandemic and Russia’s invasion in the Ukraine.
Gas prices have started to drop and inflation has begun to ease – although many economists worry the country could slide into a recession next year.
But Democrats said they believe they’ve miscalculated Biden’s level of appeal to voters.
Additionally, in the wake of the midterms, the number of Democratic voters who believe Biden could win in 2024 jumped to 71 percent, up by double digits from the 60 percent who felt that way in August, a new USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll found.
But Biden also turned 80 on Sunday. He is the oldest president ever elected and, if he ran and won again in 2024, he would be 86 at the end of a second term.
Questions remain about his age and fitness level.
‘So the President is in good health and maintains an active lifestyle. That is from the doctor – he shared that with me,’ White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday when asked about Biden’s health following the milestone birthday.
‘He will have a physical in the upcoming months and the results will be released in the same way that it was last year,’ she said.
But his advancing years have led to concerns that if Trump is not the nominee, Biden could have trouble against a younger GOP opponent – such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
‘I’m still in a wait-and-see, and I think a lot of people are,’ Democratic Rep. Ann McLane Kuster told CNN of Biden, noting that she has ‘been a Biden fan since she was pregnant with my son, who was just sworn into the New York Bar.’
Meanwhile, Trump, who announced last week he would make another presidential bid, could also face questions about his age. He is 76.
He’s also likely to face a Republican primary contest in 2024. The former president would be 82 when he leaves office if he wins a second term.

‘Biden’s age is likely to remain a subject of discussion, but with Trump now in the race – who is only four years younger – it will be hard for Republicans to argue that Biden’s age matters but Trump’s doesn’t,’ David Greenberg, a professor of history and journalism at Rutgers University and media studies and an expert on American political and cultural history, told DailyMail.com.
When Trump announced his 2024 presidential run he ignored Republican critics and those who blamed him for the GOP’s disappointing midterms to go full steam on stating his intent to be back in the Oval Office to ‘drain the swamp’ with the country ‘being destroyed before our very lives.
He used his speech to attack President Biden, the ‘radical left’ Democrats, and their record on the economy and the world stage in the two years since he left office.
‘In order to make America great and glorious again, I am today announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,’ he confirmed to huge cheers before laying into the FBI raid, the ‘fake’ dossier,’ the ‘deep state’ and lobbyists.
