Chennai Super Kings (CSK) square off against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the first game of the IPL 2023 playoff stage in Qualifier 1 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday. The winner of this tournament will book a place in the final of IPL 2023 on Sunday while the loser will have to play Qualifier 2 on Friday.
Defending champions GT are the table-toppers from the IPL 2023 league stage and MS Dhoni’s CSK will be the team to beat. Hardik Pandya’s men have never lost a match to CSK, including winning the opening match of this season at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
However, Dhoni-led CSK are coming into this match having won 8 out of 14 matches in the league stage and also had a game washed out. CSK have a very impressive record in the playoff stage, having won 15 out of 24 matches in the past.
They will also have the advantage of playing Qualifier 1 on home turf, with both Dhoni and CSK getting massive support from the Chepauk crowd. But ahead of the play-off stage, they have injury concerns to deal with skipper Dhoni, who was seen batting with a heavy knee brace.
GT opener Shubman Gill has been in form in IPL 2023 with back-to-back hundreds while his bowlers Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan top the Purple Cap table with 24 wickets each.
