The Indian team created history by winning the Thomas Cup crown for the first time since its inception in 1949. In the final match, India registered a hard-fought victory against 14-time champions Indonesia. The Indian men’s team defeated Indonesia 3-0 in the final on Sunday to become the sixth country to win the Thomas Cup. India, who beat Malaysia and Denmark by equal 3-2 margins in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, won their respective matches against Indonesia by Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and Kidambi Srikanth. The Indian team had previously reached the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup in 1952, 1955 and 1979, but could never return home with a gold medal.

“The intention was absolutely there when the trio started. Someone like Lakshya, I think it was incredible to make the move and when things weren’t working out well for him in this tournament. Was defeated and he went ahead at the right time and went on to win the title for us, especially the other Satwiks and Chirag did a great job from both of them,” HS Prannoy said while talking to ANI.

“When it comes to the finals, we knew the number of 14-time champions didn’t matter. All those numbers don’t matter. That’s how you project yourself on a particular day and it’s like ‘Don’t leave today’ hai’ and it was like in the last. The team also raged, we said the same and ‘jeet ke hi jaana hai’ and the amount of energy everyone had. All 10 of us have never seen this in our entire lives and it happens every time Gives goosebumps,” he adds.
