Emergency Medical Worker Fatally Stabbed During Call in Queens

An emergency medical worker was fatally stabbed while treating a patient in Queens on Thursday afternoon, the police said.

The paramedic, a woman in her 60s, was stabbed in the neck about 2:20 pm in Astoria, the police said. She was brought to Mt. Sinai Queens Hospital, where she was declared dead. Her name was not immediately released.

The Police Department did not explain the circumstances of the attack or provide information about her attacker. The New York City Fire Department, which includes the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Mayor Eric Adams was headed to the hospital, according to a ceremony.

The neighborhood is a quiet corner of Queens that is filled with small apartment buildings and family homes, its tree-lined streets studded with diners and auto body shops.

After the attack on Thursday, the police roped off three blocks of 20th Avenue between Steinway Street and 42nd Street. Dozens of officers and emergency workers filled the street, and helicopters buzzed overhead.

Residents who were unable to return to their homes at the end of the day gathered outside the barricades, learning about the killing on their street.

Salvador Espinoza contributed reporting.
