Brunt claimed that it was a ‘smart’ decision to retire from the sport in order to prolong his white-ball career. “I think there is never a clear time as an athlete. Stay away from doing what you love,” Brunt said in an official statement released by the England Cricket Board. “But the thoughts of retirement have come to the fore more and more in the last two years, so I have decided to make a smart decision instead of making an emotional decision. Test cricket is my absolute passion and it is indeed a heartbreaking feeling to retire from this format. But it allows me to prefer white-ball cricket,” he said.
