Four students injured in shooting near Philadelphia high school
Four teens were injured in a shooting near a high school in West Philadelphia on Wednesday after classes dismissed for the Thanksgiving break, authorities said.
First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford of the Philadelphia Police Department said at a news conference Wednesday that the students, two 15-year-old girls and two 16-year-old boys, were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition.
The shooting happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. outside a beauty salon and a block from Overbrook High School. Deputy Commissioner Stanford said a group of students were standing outside the salon when someone in a silver SUV opened fire on them.
Police did not release the names of the victims. A 15-year-old girl was shot in the left shoulder and left thigh, and another 15-year-old girl was shot in the left shoulder, police said in a statement. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the left hand and had a serious wound to his face, and another 16-year-old boy had a gunshot wound to his right leg.
Police said no arrests have been made and no weapons have been recovered. Deputy Commissioner Stanford said it was too early in the investigation to know whether students were targeted.
“Another incident of gun violence in our city,” he said at the news conference.
Gun violence in Philadelphia has been particularly bad this year. By August more than 1,400 people had been shot in the city, more than the larger cities of New York and Los Angeles combined. Officials are struggling to answer the number of guns on the street. According to a city report released this year, for every illegal gun confiscated by police in Philadelphia between 1999 and 2019, about three guns were bought or sold legally.
“It’s going to take some real serious help for us to get our weapons around our city’s problem with these guns,” Philadelphia Superintendent of Schools Tony B. Watlington said at a news conference on Wednesday.
In September, a 14-year-old student, Nicolas Elizalde, was killed and four others were injured near Roxboro High School. The five teenagers were leaving the field after playing football when the shooting took place. Roxboro High School is about five miles north of Overbrook.
Four men, ages 15 to 21, have been arrested in connection with the Roxboro High School shooting.
