From Ayushmann Khurrana to Pankaj Tripathi- 5 Bollywood characters who redefined what ‘man’ means.

NEW DELHI: The image of a man as rugged, muscular, domineering, assertive, versatile has existed in Bollywood since time immemorial.

We all remember how Sunny Deol pulled the arm pump fiercely and beat up the villains in ‘Kadar: Ek Prem Katha’.

Even before that, the legendary blockbuster ‘Sholay’ featured a brooding Amitabh Bachchan, who exemplified the ‘angry young man’ image through larger-than-life fight scenes where he single-handedly annihilates the villain’s men. on the ground.

The “macho” image has long been seen as an ideal, affecting real-life men as well. However, with the turn of the millennium, Bollywood finally began to diversify its representation of men, from mere hunky tories to telling the nuanced realities of men as they are in the flesh.

Men can be really tough, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be soft-hearted and emotional. Not all men get the exaggerated image of the powerful, bread-winning, superior heterosexual sex, as Bollywood has long portrayed them on screen.

On this International Men’s Day, let’s take a look at 5 characters shared on the Bollywood silver screen who redefined what it means to be a real man.

1. Muthit Sharma in “Shub Mangal Sawdaan”

Mudid, portrayed by Ayushmann Khurrana, is a character who suffers from erectile dysfunction. This topic is still taboo among men. As a personality, Mudd is not the confident, determined man that Bollywood has traditionally portrayed in his films. He is imperfect and doesn’t want to share problems with his wife or friends. He is cheerful, shy, shy and has a heart of gold. He redefined masculinity by letting the world know that ‘marriage is not about having children’.

2. Aman Tripathi in “Shub Mangal Ziada Sawdaan”

Portrayed by popular TVF actor Jitendra Kumar, Aman is a character who is gay but still unknown to his parents. He is a bold personality. However, he follows his heart and eventually reveals who he is to his family. He redefined masculinity by making it clear that love does not always happen between a man and a woman.

3. Laxmikant as `Lakshmi’ Chauhan in `Bad Man’

Portrayed by popular Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, Lakshmi is, on the surface, a character with a very simple and loving personality. He takes care of his family and showers love on his near and dear ones as expected of a man. However, when his wife is thrown out of the house due to menstruation, he shows empathy and interest in understanding the situation she is going through, which sets him apart. He redefined masculinity by making it clear that men’s awareness of women’s issues was also important.

4. Kabir Bansal in Ki and Ka

Ishaqzaade is portrayed by actor Arjun Kapoor as Ka, a retired son of a construction worker who prefers to stay at home and do household chores rather than get outside work to earn money. Against his family’s disapproval, he and his wife successfully manage the dynamics of their relationship and have a challenging, but happy life together. Ka redefined masculinity and emphasized that “a man need not always be the breadwinner of a family”.

5. Anup Saxena in “Kunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl”

Anup, portrayed by actor Pankaj Tripathi of ‘Mirzapur’ fame, is a loving father to daughter Gunjan like any other man. However, in supporting his daughter’s dream of becoming an Air Force pilot, this is not only unusual, but dangerous.

Instead of wanting to protect his daughter, he allows her to grow on her own and fly her own wings. In fact, he goes against his own wife’s basic views on a woman’s life.

He does not force her for marriage but rather helps her to train and achieve her goal in life. Thus redefining masculinity by letting the world know that ‘a man is not only responsible for marrying off his daughter’.
