The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday (June 15) announced the squad for the upcoming two T20 Internationals against Ireland later this month. All-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead the side along with regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who is part of the only Test squad to face England from July 1.

The Maharashtra and Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman was rewarded for his IPL 2022 performance. He scored 413 runs in IPL 2022 while playing for SRH. Social media was buoyed with Tripathi earning his maiden Team India call-up and as soon as the team was announced, his name was trending.

Happy to be back to Skye too

+ Why have the selectors picked a 17-man squad, I mean it’s just a matter of 2 matches in 3 days, aren’t our selectors able to pick just 15 players? — Aryan (@TheAryanBansal) June 15, 2022

His voice resounding with joy, the talented Maharashtra batsman Rahul Tripathi terming him as his first India call-up is the result of his enormous hard work over the years. The 31-year-old right-handed batsman has been IPL’s most consistently uncapped player in six seasons, with the 2022 edition being his best as he scored a total of 413 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad at a strike-rate of 158.24.

Tripathi, the son of an army jawan, has been consistently performing in the IPL and also for his home side Maharashtra. “It is a huge opportunity, a dream come true (moment) and (I) appreciate it,” Tripathi told news agency PTI.

“I am very happy that the selectors and everyone believed in me and I have been rewarded for all the hard work I have put in. And hopefully if I get a chance to play, I will try to give my best,” said Tripathi, who has the distinction of hitting six sixes twice in an over in a local tournament.

Tripathi, who has played for the prestigious Deccan Gymkhana Club, one of the oldest clubs in Pune, has 2,540 first-class runs in 47 matches. He has also captained Maharashtra in domestic cricket.
