Mirabai Chanu Qualifies for Commonwealth Games by Winning Gold Medal at Singapore Weightlifting International
Mirabai Chanu is all set to represent India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after bagging a gold medal in the 55kg category by lifting a total of 191kg at the Singapore Weightlifting International on Friday (February 25). Competing for the first time in the 55kg category, Chanu lifted 191kg (86kg + 105kg) to top the podium in an uncompetitive field.
The Indian weightlifter found his pride after securing India’s first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She fought bravely till the end and won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category. Since then the Olympian has continued to build up and work up a sweat by training day in and day out for the 2022 season event.
The lifter was overjoyed with the qualification and said, “7 months of intense training and my never-ending love for the sport is paying off. I would like to thank our Ministry of Youth Affairs and Affairs, Weightlifting Federation of India, SAI , IOS Sports and all other stakeholders who have helped me reach this point. I am committed to work hard and do everything possible to make my country win the gold medal again in the Commonwealth Games.
The CWG qualification event will allow the top 8 lifters in each category to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, of which Chanu has ensured a place not only in the 49kg category but also in the 55kg category for India.
The 27-year-old, based on her Commonwealth rankings, qualified for Birmingham 2022 in the 49kg category.
