The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast normal rainfall over the country during July, which is 280.4 mm as per data from 1971 to 2020. Percentage of Long Period Average (LPA),” said the forecast released on Friday.
However, Odisha, West Bengal, Northeast India, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Vidarbha regions will receive below normal rainfall during this month. Above normal rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Interior Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi and Tripura this month.
July rainfall accounts for 35 per cent of the seasonal rainfall and is important for the sowing and early stages of kharif crops. Rainfall is particularly important this month as June ended with the country deficient by 8 per cent.
Presently, an East-West Trough is running between North-West Rajasthan and North-East Bay of Bengal, attracting moist winds from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal over areas of North India. There is a possibility of widespread rain during the next five days over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Overall, Monsoon is likely to remain active for about 10 days from the first week of July, causing widespread rainfall over the entire country including Central India, except the Northeast regions.
On Friday, the Southwest Monsoon advanced into some more parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. With the availability of favorable conditions, Monsoon is very likely to cover the entire country during the next two to three days. Till Friday, the northern limit of monsoon passed through Deesa, Chittorgarh, Bikaner and Khajuwala.
