Norway Chess: Magnus Carlsen takes sole lead as Viswanathan Anand loses to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov

Indian maestro Viswanathan Anand’s campaign in the Norway chess tournament suffered a setback after losing to Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the ninth round, while Norwegian star Magnus Carlsen took the only lead with a win over Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Anand showed impressive form with a win over Carlsen to lead the standings after the fifth round, but lost to Mamedyarov in 22 moves in a classical match at the Petroff Millennium Attack game on Thursday (June 9).

As the tournament resumed after Wednesday’s rest day, the 37-year-old from Azerbaijan took advantage of the Indian legend’s mistake to score three full points. Anand, who was second only to world number one Carlsen after seven rounds, slipped to third place with 13 points at the conclusion of the eighth and final round.

After a very intense round, Magnus Carlsen is still the leader of #NorwayChess with 15 points. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov follows closely, only half a point behind!

Meanwhile, Carlsen defeated Vachier-Lagrave via Armageddon after the regular classical game ended in a 79-move draw. The sudden death tie-break was also lengthy as the Norwegian superstar needed 54 moves to subdue his opponent. Carlsen is the only leader with 15 points, followed by Mamedyrov at 14.5. Vachier-Lagrave is fourth by half a point behind Anand.

In other matches of the day, American Wesley So, who had won the blitz event before the classical tournament, lost to veteran Bulgarian Veselin Topalov at Armageddon and Timur Radzabov defeated Hao Wang (China) in a sudden death tiebreak.

Dutch player Anish Giri, who has had a stammer campaign, overcame Norway’s Aryan Tari to score three points from 61 moves in a classical match. The ninth and final round will be played later on Friday night.

In the Norwegian chess tournament, players participate in Armageddon (sudden death) in the event of a draw in a classical match.
