Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: Amid Opposition protests, Rajya Sabha passes Family Court Bill; Kharge summoned to Herald House
On Wednesday, Minister of Electronics and IT (MEITY) Ashwini Vaishnav withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019. The reasons for the withdrawal were circulated in a note to MPs, which stated that, “considering the report of the JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee), a comprehensive legal framework is being worked out…”. The decision wastes years of labor and deliberation on the legislation required to protect every Indian in a digital society. Therefore, it is important for us to understand its implications by considering why the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 was introduced in Parliament first, and second, whether it is appropriate to withdraw it.
Better late than not: Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday hosted a dinner for Deputy Speaker of the Opposition Margaret Alva and leaders and MPs of opposition parties. For a moment, everyone thought that the host would not be able to make it in time because he was in the Herald House. It was in the presence of Kharge that the Enforcement Directorate launched a search operation in the office of Young Indian. Congress veterans managed to reach more than an hour late while waiting for senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar and Tiruchi Siva. Kharge, 80, was in the Young Indian office with ED officials for nearly eight hours.
