Popular YouTuber Hank Green announced on Friday that he’s been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has begun chemotherapy in an attempt to beat the disease.

Green is also the co-founder of VidCon, an annual convention for fans, creators, executives, and online brands and featuring various viral stars.

He made the announcement in a 13-minute video that was uploaded to his channel on Friday, talking about how quickly everything moved up until his diagnosis.

‘When you’re in the American health care system, you don’t expect things to move quickly,’ he said. ‘When it starts to get a little efficient, it’s actually quite disconcerting.’

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a form of cancer affecting the lymphatic system, a key part of building up bodily immunity and fighting germs.

Popular YouTuber Hank Green announced on Friday that he’s been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has begun chemotherapy in an attempt to beat the disease.

‘It seems likely that we caught mine early. I’m still waiting on a scan to sort of confirm that,’ Green said, tweeting later that he had begun undergoing chemotherapy.

Green’s brother John is a popular young adult author, including The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska, which have all been adapted for film and television.

The Fault in Our Stars adaptation made over $300 million internationally at the box office.

The Green brothers often collaborate together on YouTube videos and co-host a podcast called Dear Hank and John.

‘Some important news from Hank,’ the elder Green wrote in a tweet Friday. ‘My little brother is my closest collaborator, oldest friend, and my absolute hero. Thank you for loving him as I do, and supporting us–and each other–in a tough time.’

Hank Green added in his video that he’s gotten tons of advice from friends who have dealt with various cancers.

He was unsure how the fight against Hodgkin’s lymphoma would affect his work going forward.

‘I’m playing it by ear,’ he said. ‘I know I’m gonna feel like garbage, like it’s gonna be really unpleasant.’

VidCon announced later Friday that Green would not be appearing at its upcoming event in Anaheim.

‘Due to his recent diagnosis, Hank will no longer be able to attend VidCon Anaheim 2023 next month,’ the VidCon Instagram account wrote.

‘To our Co-Founder, go-to science guy, and only person on the internet who seems to understand where all the candle wax goes: we’re sending all the love from the VidCon community & beyond.’

Ultimately, Green admits that they’ve caught the disease early but clearly has a sense of humor about the whole ordeal.

They say god gives his toughest battles to his strongest warriors,’ Green tweeted. ‘He gave me super treatable, early stage Hodgkin’s lymphoma because he knows I’m a lil baby.

Following Green’s announcement, many shared their support for him in comments.

‘So sorry to hear Hank! Wishing you all the strength and energy to get through this,’ gaming YouTuber Seán McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye, tweeted.

‘I don’t care if it’s parasocial but legit love and care about you like you’re my weird uncle I never see. You have provided me, unknowingly, with so much strength over the years and I hope that you feel like the community can pour some strength into you!!’ one fan tweeted.

Fans also sent Green photos of pelicans to show their love, per Green’s request.
