Poland’s national football team has refused to play a World Cup qualifier against Russia next month in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Polish Football Association president Cesari Kuleza made the announcement on Twitter and indicated that Poland is in talks with other federations to offer FIFA a unified position.
“No more words, time to act!”, Culesza wrote, adding that the move was inspired by ‘an escalation of aggression’.

A minute after the announcement, Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, the country’s all-time leading scorer, quickly replied that it was the right decision.

He wrote on his Twitter: “I can’t imagine playing a match with the Russian national team in a situation when the armed invasion of Ukraine continues.”

“Russian footballers and fans are not to blame, but we cannot pretend that nothing is happening.

This is the right decision! I can’t imagine playing a match with the Russian national team in a situation when there is an armed offensive in Ukraine. Russian footballers and fans are not responsible for this, but we cannot pretend that nothing is happening.

Earlier, Poland had only said that it did not want to play the qualifying playoff semi-finals in Moscow on 24 March.

The winner plays either Sweden or the Czech Republic for a place in the Qatar World Cup.

After nighttime blasts and street fighting, Russian troops pushed toward the Ukrainian capital, which sent Kiev residents in search of underground shelter.

It was not immediately clear how far the Russian army had advanced. Ukrainian officials reported some success in stopping the attacks, but fighting continued near the capital.
