Russia-Ukraine crisis: Sean Penn filming documentary on Russian invasion of Ukraine
Los Angeles: Hollywood star Sean Penn, known for his involvement in anti-war and humanitarian causes, is shooting a documentary on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, ‘Variety’ reports.
The Oscar winner hears Ukrainian government officials talk about the ongoing crisis at a press briefing in Kiev on Thursday (US Pacific Standard Time).
Doc is a Vice Studio production in association with Vice World News and Endeavor Content. The actor last visited Ukraine in November 2021 to begin preparations for his documentary with the country’s military installations, ‘Variety’ reports.
“Penn visited the President’s office and spoke to [Ukrainian] Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, as well as local journalists and members of the Ukrainian military,” Variety quoted Newsweek as reporting.
The President’s Office issued a statement through the Ukrainian Embassy praising the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker. A translation of the statement accessed by ‘Variety’ read: “The director came to Kiev specifically to record all the events that are currently taking place in Ukraine and to tell the world about Russia’s invasion of our country. To tell the truth.”
The statement read: “Sean Penn is among those supporting Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a display of courage and honesty. Sean Penn is displaying bravery, including many others.” is lacking, especially among some Western politicians.
“The more people like this – true friends of Ukraine, who support the fight for independence – the sooner we can stop this heinous invasion by Russia.”
