Sensex down 153 points in early trade; Nifty slips below 15,700

Equity benchmark indices remained on the back foot for the fourth straight day on Wednesday with the Sensex falling 153 points in early trade amid mixed global cues and unabated foreign capital outflow.

The BSE benchmark was trading 153.25 points lower at 52,540.32 in early trade. Nifty fell 39.55 points to 15,692.55.

From the Sensex pack, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, HDFC and Nestle were the major laggards.

On the other hand, Bajaj Finserv, M&M, Tata Steel and Bajaj Finance were among the gainers.

Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Seoul and Tokyo were trading lower, while Shanghai and Hong Kong were quoted in the green during mid-session deals.

Stock exchanges in the US closed on a mixed note in the overnight session.

In the previous session, the 30-share BSE benchmark had settled 153.13 points or 0.29% lower at 52,693.57. The NSE Nifty closed at 15,732.10, down 42.30 points or 0.27%.

“All eyes will be on the outcome of the June policy meeting of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee), focusing on the magnitude of the rate hike. Also, FII selling in the domestic market and crude oil prices from USD 121.3 per barrel. Will remain up on investor sentiment,” said Prashant Taapsee, vice president (research), Mehta Equities.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.12% to $121.35 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital market as they sold shares worth ₹4,502.25 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.
