Shehzada, Bhola…: Most Anticipated Bollywood Remakes from South Movies in 2023

While South Indian movies are making huge profits, the current climate of Bollywood is very bad as most of the big budget films are facing a decline at the box office. The trend of remaking South Indian films in Bollywood has been popular lately. Bollywood filmmakers are very much inspired by the style of South filmmakers. The trend of remaking South Indian films became popular after the two South Indian remake superhits ‘Ghajini and Wanted’. After these successes, Bollywood began to remake South Indian films. Although this pattern was prevalent in the past due to blockbusters like Rehna Hai Tere Dil Main, Suriyavansham, Halsul, Ghajini, Wanted and Bodyguard, the trend has only just returned.
Several Bollywood remakes of South Indian films were released last year, but the original Jersey starring Shahid Kapoor was below average at the box office and equaled the remake of Milli Malayalam film Helen starring Janhvi Kapoor. Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan starrer Vikram Vedha was below average at the box office. So Bollywood remakes of South Indian movies last year were not as successful as previous years. 2023 is no exception as many South Indian blockbusters are being remade in Bollywood and here are some of the best remakes in Bollywood in 2023.

1. Shehzada- Remake of Ala Vaikunthapuramulu (Telugu).
Allu Arjun was a great star in Telugu but Pushpa changed everything for him and now he is popular in South Indian markets but he has established himself as a major player in Hindi speaking regions as well. Karthik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon starrer ‘Shesada’ is a remake of Arjun’s blockbuster Telugu family drama ‘Ala Vaikunthapuramulu’. Shehzada is slated to release on 10 February 2023.
2. Bola- Remake of Kaithi (Tamil).
Ajay Devgn’s upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller Bhola is an official remake of the Karthik-starrer Tamil blockbuster Kaithi. Ajay Devgan plays the lead role in Dilli, in which Tabu also plays a police officer. The teaser of the film was released and received mixed reviews. Bola is slated to release on 30 March 2023.
3. Selfie- Remake of Driving License (Malayalam)
‘Selfie’ is a remake of the 2019 Malayalam comedy-drama film ‘Driving License’ starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi will be seen together on screen for the first time. The trailer of the film is already out and has been well received. Directed by Raj Mehta, the film also stars Nushrat Bharuchha and Diana Pendy.
4. The Stranger (Tamil) Remake
Cyan Vikram-starrer Tamil Blockbuster Thiruvanan was a psychological action thriller that won eight Filmfare Awards and six State Film Awards as well as a National Award. Bollywood star Ranveer Singh in the lead role in the Hindi remake of Lerbanan, which will be directed by the original’s Anniyan Shankar. The Hindi version of The Stranger, Aparisid is one of the most telecasted films on Hindi TV channels. The blockbuster film marked the first time director Shankar and actor Vikram teamed up and became one of the highest grossing films across South India.
5. Kumra- Thadam (Tamil) Remake
Kumra starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrinal Thakur is an official remake of Thadam. For the first time, Aditya Roy Kapur is seen in a double role in a crime thriller based on true incidents. Mrinal on the other hand plays a police officer. Murad Khedani’s Cine1 Studios and Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series are producing the film under the direction of newcomer Vardhan Ketkar.
