Mumbai: Veteran Chandur composer and composer Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma died of a heart attack on Tuesday morning, family sources said. He is 84. Sharma, one of India’s most popular traditional musicians, is scheduled to perform in Bhopal next week. He also suffered from kidney disease.
“He had a severe heart attack at 9 am … he was active and was scheduled to perform in Bhopal next week. He was undergoing regular dialysis but was still active,” the family source told PTI.
A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, Sharma was born in Jammu in 1938 and is believed to be the first musician to play Indian traditional music in Chandur, a folk instrument of Jammu and Kashmir.
Halfway through the musicians Shiv-Hari, flute legend Pandit Hari co-wrote the series with Prasad Saurasia for a series of films such as “Silsila”, “Lamhe” and “Chandini”.
His son Rahul Sharma is also a Chandoor player.
