For the first time ever, two real-life showbiz couples have been nominated for Oscars in four acting categories. The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday. Penelope Cruz and husband Javier Bardem are shortlisted for Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively. Kirsten Dunst has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and her partner Jesse Plemons is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The couples have made nominations in past Oscars together, winning even; However, this is the first time that two couples have been nominated and covered all four acting categories.

Penelope-Javier and Kirsten-Jesse join a surprisingly long list of couples vying for the Oscars in the same year. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were a couple when they were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress at the 2009 Oscars for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and That Changeling. Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were also nominated for Oscars and for the same film – Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain.

The 1996 film version of Fargo won an Oscar for real-life couple Frances McDormand and Joel Coen. She won the first of her three Best Actress Awards, sharing the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay with brother Ethan Coen.

The first couple to be nominated for an Oscar in the same year were The Guardsman’s co-stars Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine, who were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress in 1932. Other couples include Rex Harrison and Rachel Roberts, who were nominated for Best in 1964. Actor (Cleopatra) and Best Actress (This Sporting Life); Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward for Rachel in 1969 – she won Best Actress, Best Picture as a Producer; and in 1975 John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands were nominated for Best Director and Best Actress for A Woman Under the Influence.
