Why Pool Pulia 2 director Akshay Kumar did not participate in its sequel

New Delhi: ‘Pool Pulia 2’ starring Karthik Aryan and Kiara Advani was released on May 20. The horror-comedy film directed by Anees Basmi has emerged as the biggest Bollywood opener of 2022 and grossed Rs 14.11 crore on its opening day. The film is a sequel to the 2007 hit psychological thriller starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiny Ahuja. Although elements of the original film were retained, the lead actors did not return to the sequel.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Anees said, “Akshay is too big for these little things. Akshay Kumar cannot be changed and he knows that there is no replacement for him in this film. Akshay has had an excellent job for 25 years. Akshay does comedy, dances, does action, does everything, he gets the kind of pictures he wants. So, whether he will act in Pool Pulia 2 or not is a very small thing. But of course, if he had been in our film, if our story had allowed, I firmly believe (he would have done it). We share a great relationship and friendship. With him I had directed the films Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Welcome and Singh Is King. We share a great relationship and would love to work with him again.

However, the director said that the sequel was completely new and independent. “Our Pool Pulia 2 pool Pulia was created in the universe, but even in its sequel it is completely independent,” Anees said.

He further explained why some elements from the original film are still retained. “Of course we brought back some things from Pool Pulia. Not only did I get Monzolica back, I also brought back two songs by Amy J Tomar and Teri Ankain Pool Pulia. I also have ghungro sounds, of course Haveli and Rajpal Yadav. I would not say it was a copy, these things inspired us and we wanted to transform it into our own image in our own way. We tried, and then when you look at our picture, you will remember the picture, but you will feel that this is a brand new movie.
