WPI inflation rises to a high of 15.88% in May

According to official data, wholesale price-based inflation (WPI) hit a new record high of 15.88% in May, from 15.08% in April.

“The higher rate of inflation in May is mainly due to increase in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum and natural gas, food items, base metals, non-food items, chemicals and chemical products and food products over the previous year. ” Ministry of Commerce and Industry said. In May 2021, the inflation rate was recorded at 13.11 percent.

Fuel and power inflation rose to 40.62% in May, from 31.8% in March and 38.7% in April.

This March’s Wholesale Price Index was also revised upwards, reflecting an inflation rate of 14.63% instead of the earlier estimated 14.5%.

Wholesale food price inflation, which declined marginally to 8.9% in April from 9.3% in March, rose to 10.9% in May.

Inflation in primary articles also picked up, rising from 15.45% in April to 19.71 per cent in May.

The only category of goods that saw a marginal decline in inflation was manufactured products, where the pace of wholesale price growth was 10.11% in May as compared to 10.85% in April.
